| Stay away from pills if at all possible. My ex was trying to quit smoking and was taking some medication for it and long story short, he had a bad reaction and things didn't turn out well.
Try alternatives first- like
1) switching to a brand with less chemicals in it first to make quitting easier (like American Spirit),
2) trying to figure out when that most important cigarette of the day is and just not smoking that particular one (i.e. the first thing in the morning one, or the after dinner one) to break the worst of the habit without the nicotine withdrawal on top of it.
3) Cut way, way down before you quit to ease yourself off the nicotine
4) Do NOT hang out with people who smoke
5) Get a replacement behavior- like taking a walk around the block every time you want a smoke.
