| Gnutella is basically the network established by a bunch of unconnected cells of computers sharing files. There's no central core server so it can never be shut down. Now Kazaa doesn't use the Gnutella network. It uses the same principle but it only uses files shared by Kazaa users. That makes it a smaller radius of computers that you get to search from and also has a LOT of files stuck in by the RIAA that just squeak and squeal so that you can't get what you want as I'm sure you've noticed. So basically it uses the same process as Kazaa but with no shit files and with a LOT more users to search from. Been around for years and years.
