It was also kind of a reward to the ring bearers like himself and Bilbo. They get to go wherever the Elves all went when they left Middle Earth at the Dawn of the Age of Man. The time for Elves was over. Bearing the One Ring was such a great burden that it really changed the people who bore it. Things just weren't the same anymore to them..they were forever like depressed and desensitized... This is as I remember from the book. Also, Sam who was the third of the ring bearers (as he bore the ring for a little while when they were hauling off Frodo, remember?) much much later, when he was an old man, the boat came back and picked up old Samwise Gamgee.
