Yesterday I decided to enter my home towns first marathon set for April 2010.

    Thanks

Everyone I know that runs marathons belongs to a running group. If your town is large enough to host a marathon, there are certainly groups in your area. I'd look for them - try through your parks and rec department.

You have almost an entire year to prep, so that's good.

    Start training now.

I suggest starting off with 5 miles for the first month, then increasing the distance with 2 miles every month till you reach the 26.2 miles required to finish a marathon.

Preferable you train every second day.

If you can't run the entire stretch due to weather conditions, a treadmill can be used.

Don't forget to stretch and warm up before you start running.

Make sure you wear appropreate running shoes and clothing.

Have someone following you with a vehicle and carry fluids for you.

Watch your diet, you'll be burning a lot of energy. Marathons are very demanding on the body.

Don't worrie to much about time. Marathons are about endurance.

You want to save as much energy as possible for the last 2 miles, that's where the decissions are made on who finalizes first.

if you're an avid running, then what is your limitation? know that before anything and build slowly. once you hurt yourself due to the constant pounding that your bones will take, it takes a long time to heal.

also if you run on grass, it's easier on your bones in the long run.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I'll look into a running group around here or set up training sessions myself and see if anyone wants to join.

Must admit that wearing out your joints from constant running on the road does sound correct - shall stick to grass.

Thanks for the link kjb - hoping there's some tips on there to prevent blisters too.
