A hickie is a sign of ownership. So if guys see a girl walking down the street and see hickies all over her neck, or something then they'll see she's taken. That's the whole idea of giving a hickie to the opposite sex. It shows a sign of ownership.

places to put hickies other than the neck is kinda up to the person giving it. if they are already kissing, the neck is closer to the mouth. i usually give my girl (at the time) a kiss on the neck and i stop myself (very hard) before she gets a "bruise". for some reason she gives out this sigh as if she's saying "why'd you stop?" then i think about the times back in high school when i gave my girl (at the time) hickies. i felt so bad for her because she had to walk around campus with those things all over her neck. everyone knew we were going out and it wasn't her they were looking at/talking about, it was me! that's when i realized anywhere but the neck is the best place to put them. then again, i don't let any girls give me hickies on my neck for the same reason. *missing having a girlfriend*
