I think Spanish is the national language of Mexico, so one would naturally assume that someone from Mexico speaks Spanish,regardless of skin color, just as one might assume that people living in England speak english. Could they be wrong? Of course, but usually not.
And I wouldn't have called that guy "African American", but rather "black".
