It's ciao. And it's Italian, though with these things the origin is often twisty. Used a lot in other European countries though, I certainly use it a lot with my family.

I get a lot of ciao. The first person I heard it from was a friend of mine from Brazil- apparently it's widely used in Portugese too. Most of the people who ciao me are men, for some reason.
