Seriously.

For those who don't know my story, I'm 24 years old, and I just got out of a 4 year relationship. I'm obviously not looking for anything remotely serious, but I did get invited by this woman to a party this weekend (I don't THINK it's a date, but yes, I could be wrong there, too). Then, it hit me.

I haven't been single since I was NINETEEN. I have no idea what I'm doing. At all.

I'm obviously not going to get into a relationship, but I do want to be able to understand what the hell I'm supposed to do to flirt, engage in conversation, and even ask for a date or two along the way.

So, let me hear some tips, if you don't mind. What's the difference between flirting/dating as an adult and a teenager? When I get to the point where I do want to date again, what's the best way to go about it?

Help Mathias. Please.

The big difference is limitations on sexual behavior: there pretty much are none that aren't up to personal choice. When you're a teenager, there are certain things you just take for granted, rules, dating etiquitte, etc.

Adults have a huge array of rules, and you'll have to learn how to determine what they are in each situation. Some women will not sleep with someone for at least three dates, no matter what. Some will be highly insulted that you didn't try to get into their pants immediately.

You're used to that one girl. Now, you're going out into a world full of different girls.

I felt that way too, except it was from 12 all the way to 15.

The thing is, you gotta just relax. I honestly suggest you don't rush into things and take a step back to be single a little bit, because once you get a girlfriend you're going to bitch about not being single.

Just chill, read up on a few topics like flirting, etc. Don't feel embarrassed about it, either.

That's what I'm going for.

I'm taking the advice of waiting until I graduate from grad school (8 months) before even CONSIDERING another relationship. But, I would like advice, and even during this time, I'll probably casually date.

I just don't want to suck at it!

Mathias - Don't bother trying to read into what some person is doing for now. Just have fun and enjoy life for a bit. Once you are ready for another relationshipt you can start learning the new "langauge" adults use.

I'm really looking forward to hearing about the party this weekend. You probably know what you're doing, but the idea of you having no idea at all whether or not it's even a date is full of hilarious possibilities.

I hope you don't end up in a hot tub with two women, like this:

But in all seriousness, it's going to be a crazy weekend. It's the party on Friday, then t an Oktoberfest with a ton of people on Saturday.

I'm sure I'll have SOME story to share.
