Get her a cat?

Those of you that read my Ah **** thread know that my GF (more accurately, my best friend and sometimes girlfriend) has a pretty serious form of cancer. She is starting chemo tomorrow.

I know that she and I are in for some hard times. I was thinking that getting her a cat would help.

A few years ago she had a near fatal head injury and it was her cat that comforted her through that. The cat is now dying of cancer (irony?) 1000 miles from her. She has told me that she loves that cat more than anything in this world. In fact, I believe that cat kept her alive through that ordeal.

And yes, she's a total cat lover. I would of course be very willing to take care of it when she's not well. Sometimes I know an animal is more comforting than even someone who loves you.

Should I buy her a kitty? Both of our places are animal friendly, so that's not an issue.

You'd better ask her. Having a pet is a responsibility she may not wish to undertake at this time. I would seriously be upset by the idea of having that sort of responsibility hoisted on me.

hmmm... if you ask, the surprise goes of. If she isn't able to take responsibility for the cat, you might consider to keep it yourself, so you can take responsibility for it... You have to question yourself if you want that or not. Cause you can't expect her to take care of a cat you bought and where she might have some trouble taking care of it.

Thats what I think I'll do. I'll get a cat, the cutest damn one I can find, name it after a mountain and bring it over to visit lots.
