I have heard good things about it as long as you actually have a decent tv that can support the quality that it offers.

HD-DVD players are 200-300 not 600. That would be blue-ray that is way up there in price.
I can not say which one will win the format war but it seems that blue-ray has gotten off a good start but imo will fall on it's face later. The only reason it seems to be getting more sales at the moment is because ps3 owners are buying them (the movies in blue-ray format) since the ps3 comes with a built in blue-ray player. But the ps3 sales have not been that great lately and not many consumers want to dish out 500$ or more on a blue-ray player.
Also Toshiba is supporting hd-dvd and there is a mixed statement sent out by walmart that said that one of the formats would not be sold at there store at a certain time. It has been suggested that hd-dvd will be the format they choose to sell since they use Toshiba things a good deal and also they market the cheaper things most commonly (ala, hd-dvd).
I will also say though that for a while only one group (big one, don't remember what one though) has gone just hd-dvd and not blue-ray as well. Some others have chosen blue-ray only so yeah... it is still being decided who will win.
Just some things I have heard..... it is your choice but if you are not comfortable you should just stick with dvd until the winner becomes apparent.
