| | | Inaugural Book Thread So we've got an official home for threads on books!
I guess we can kick this off by talking about what kind of literature you like to read, what you're reading now, what you're thinking of reading in the future, what book you've read that you'd like to discuss..what color your bike is, and anything else you want relating to books or not...no wait.. it has to be related to books, or else this would go under the Gen Discuss section.
Oh, by the way...raverboy is unofficially banned from this thread because he said he hates to read. Now since I don’t have any real power, this will have to be an honor system ban. So raverboy..if you’re reading this, you’re already in violation of your ban because the ban includes both reading and posting on this thread.
Okay, now that that’s out of the way.. I’ll start:
Blue and I were discussing a book we both read called “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel. Has anyone else read this one?
Now, EVERYBODY has read “The Davinci Code” by Dan Brown …does anybody want to discuss this one?
Right now I’m actually reading an old book “It” by Stephen King. I want to finish it and then watch the miniseries because I don’t think I ever watched the whole thing.
Oh, another thing..let’s not spoil books for others here. Or at least give warning before you do, for example in Life of Pi, the main dies in the end. See, I should not have done that without warning you first that a spoiler was coming up. Now this was just a joke, obviously, but seriously, let’s not ruin books for one another.
Next I think I’ll read the Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I was inspired to read it after seeing “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”…though I was unimpressed with the movie.
Some co-worker told me when this movie was coming out that the Dorian Gray character was actually inspired by a book called “The Golden Key”, but that wasn’t true, as it turned out, but I read “The Golden Key” by Melanie Rawn, Jennifer Roberson, and Kate Elliott (collaboration) anyway and really liked it. It’s a fantasy-type fiction…and an epic as it takes place over the span of many, many years. Did anyone else read it?
Okay, enough for me..now you contribute.
Freddie

| | | Okay, that's violation number one, raverboy..which merits a verbal warning... but beware: 274 more of those and we'll have to take action, somehow...

| | | I reasd the da vinci code a while ago and absolutely loved it. I really enjoy books where they combine true facts into a story, it' like a way to improve your knowledge painlessly! Sometimes in the da vinci code I did wonder if all the really random things were actually true.
Anyone with any knowledge about that stuff enlightenment would be gratefully received!
I haven't managed to get round to reading anything else by him yet, and at the moment am also up to my eyeballs in text books revising.

| | | cbee..
Remind me again sometime to give you the link to this PBS Frontline series called "From Jesus to the Christ". Frontline does some awsome investigative reporting..digging really deep, you know..and they have a bunch of info online if you just want to read it, or you could order the video like I did.
Yeah, what I liked about that book was all the facts. What I didn't like was the exaggerations and his writing style I wasn't impressed with. The story was okay, but not great either..to me. But definitely it gets you thinking, plus I had previously had conversations with people about religion and all that jazz, so this book was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back in revolutionizing my religious habbits. I was resisting because it's hard to change 26 year-old habbits that span over 100% of one's life, but there it is.
HEYYY.. We didn't mention my favorite series of all time: Harry Potter! I love those books. I'm so pissed that when I moved recently I couldn't find my Harry Potter hardbacks and my Golden Key book either. Hopefully they'll turn up, or else I'm going to have to buy them again!
Damn.

| | | "It" by Stephen King? I've read that psycho gibberish along with other dysfunctional novelsby King. My mom is an absolute fan, so we've got a whole collection back at home. I wouldn't say "It" was that great, but I absolutely loved "Firestarter", "Carrie" (did Stephen have a misfortunate experience with Jehovah's Witnesses?), "The Shining", "Misery" and a bunch of other psychedelic short stories. Most of these I read when I was significantly younger, about 13-14, so I'll have a lot to discuss with my future psychologist.
Actually, my mom has three master's degrees and is the biggest bookworm in the world. (It's true that Russian women are the most literate people in the world.) So ever since I learned to read, I've been forced to read classic literature. What I don't understand is how the heck did I end up with Guy De Maupassant's "Une Vie" (A Woman's Life) and "Mon Cher Ami" when I was only 12?!

| | | That'd be great Freddie. i'd be really interested in that.I never trust what they write in books - there was a big thing recently in the UK about the book "The Other Boleyn Girl" where the author had the two Boleyn sister's ages switched which was such a stupid thing to get wrong especially when the story made more sense with them having the correct ages. A good book (easy, mindless interesting read) apart from that.
I agree with your opinion on the storyline of The Da Vinci code - the twist at the ending was so contrived it was untrue.
Stephen King doesn't do it for me, nor Terry Pratchett, I like books grounded in fact or that I can relate to the world around me.

| | | I like mystery, thriller, medical kinda books, and have spent countless hours reading Indian books, Tony Hillerman is awesome! Hes a got a character whose a detective, and he uses Indian heritage throughout his books. I think I might have to read the Da Vinci Code, that sounds interesting. Ive got so many authors I read, I love when they come out with a new book. I have tried tirelessly to read Stephen King, cant do it, if you need a book to put your bootie to sleep Insominia is it.
My all time favorite is Thomas Harris, he wrote the Silence of the Lambs, unfortunately, he's only got 4 books out, that stinks cause his books are so much better than the movies.
Some great authors Ive come across:
Thomas Harris, Tony Hillerman, Iris Johansen, Linda Lay Shuler, Beverly Bird, Carla Neggers, Dean Koontz, Michael Palmer, Jack Higgins, Faye Kellerman
love to read!

There cbee..that link should get you to a bunch of info on facts and myths and theories about Christianity and its origins. There's a lot of info there, haven't read it all myself, but maybe I'll get around to it someday.
Does anybody like Sci Fi? Isaac Asimov?

Freddie How interesting! I'm actually taking a class on Archaeological Discoveries relating to the Bible, don't go to that site, these guys are biased. Ask me. Just kidding, well you can if you want.
