Everybody does it, but what IS it? What makes flirting, "flirting"? Like: If someone's flirting, does that always mean they want more than just that? Or, what about the person who tries to flirt, but fails? What makes what they do NOT flirting? Or, how is flirting any different from making a romantic advance on someone? What are flirting's defining qualities? Thoughts, anyone?

trying to think of some examples of flirting -
1) 20th century version - The conversations in James Bond movies between Bond & women.
2) 19th century version - Jane Austen novels. Flirting of a different era.
3) 21st century - don't know. Everyone is so blatant these days.

I think flirting is innate. In the real world, (outside LF) I am quite reserved, but I do have my moments, in which I probably flirt - but with no intentions - only to put a smile on the recipeint face!

My definition of flirting is 'nothing but playful exchanges' between man and woman (or man/man, woman/woman -> whatever tickles your fancy).
