Something popped in to my head a few days ago and I can't stop thinking about it because I can't figure it out. Everyone I ask says they don't know either.

OK... you know when you open your freezer a bunch of something billows out? What is that called? I've been told fog and steam, as well as smoke, but none of those seem right. Plus, my bf asked a bunch of Linux geeks and they just tore it to shreds and gave me no actual answer. Mist? Vapor?

Well, Red, considering that you're posting from "somewhere that is miserably hot and humid", you probably have a lot of moisture in the air. When that moisture starts to condense, it becomes (you guessed it) vapor. I'm sure the fact that water expands as it cools and contracts as it warms affects this somehow, maybe as it hits the hot air of the kitchen, it's forced to condense quickly, causing it to form vapor, but it's been a while since physics class so I can't prove it.

actually on a snowy day when you exhale, you notice your own breathe because it's so cold right? the warm air that changes to something semitransparent is what you see. it's the same with the freezer. when you open the door all the warm air rushes into the freezer, and you see the change in temperature.
