Well, the main reason is because out of all the kids only a few survive to adulthood, and since their pension system is practically non-existant the parents' only real chance of surviving once they can't work anymore is to be taken care of by their kids.

Sterilize 90%, have the other 10% killed off by malaria / HIV, and voilá, mass extinction.
