They have a corrupt government and they feel threatened by the outside world. In greater context Russians are recovering from the humiliation of the fall of the Soviet Union and now with a stronger economy they see an opportunity to expand their influence. This comes in conflict with US which also wants to expand its influence in the region. Hence the clash.
