Post Do you think Internet forums are no longer as good as they used to be?

I have been a member of countless forums over the course of 15 or so long years. I will admit that this is due to major social anxiety, boredom and of course, loneliness too. There was a time where I found forums to be stimulating, as I am sure other people were likely seeking out fellow fans to debate about their beloved franchises with.

Out of the ones I actually still visit on an infrequent basis, only a handful of the users are actually still making decent posts. Otherwise, it feels like you are talking to yourself. Even if new games are announced, there is a sudden slew of new posts, and little else. But following a retrospective outlook back at least half of that time period, I have began to see message boards online as being among the lowest of the low. And this is truly sad, because I feel it does not necessarily have to be that way.

I am not sure why, but there seems to be zero point in posting threads on video games or movies related websites anymore. Whenever I do post, I seldom receive any logical response - that's if I even get a reply. Sometimes, a reply may be posted by an uninteresting member, but it is just a few words and an emoji. Now I am not saying people have to constantly be Miss or Sir Type-A-Lot to meet my posting standards as it were. Some people are just not good spellers. But it is like nobody really even makes an effort to make sense these days. It leads me to think they are just trying to get their post count raised or something.

I also went over to the GameSpot forums. Dead as a doorknob. And for a major site, that feels bizarre. Has everybody abandoned forums and went to Facebook?

It's funny. I hadn't really thought of it, but I actually think I may agree. This forum, at least so far, has generally been an exception to that for me. That's one of the reasons I still enjoy coming back here day to day. It does seem to sometimes get a little slower than others, but in general there is still ongoing discussions.

But, when I think of other message boards I used to frequent, many of them seem all but dead. When I think of others I try to visit for one reason or another, they rarely seem to have much participation, or much of anything that interests me. So, I hadn't really thought of it, but now that I am putting some thought to it, I kind of do feel like I may agree with you. In general, that is.

One example I used to frequent all the time were the IMDB message boards. The cool thing there is there is a separate message board for basically every movie, TV show, actor, etc. on the site. And, many of them had a lot of activity when I used to visit years ago..... but these days there seems to be so little activity other than in sometimes when a movie or TV show just came out, and the activity there is just always either gets no responses, or eventually winds up degenerating into immature stupid bickering even over the most benign of topics that should never incite such vitriol. So, it long since has ceased to be a worthwhile site for having discussions with other people.

I hope this site remains as active, and as relatively pain in the butt free as it has in my experience thus far.

Cosmopolitan used to have a really good online forum. It was only for women though. They shut it down a few years ago but it was awesome. I only follow this one to keep up with the regulars and see if anyone asks for interesting advice. Other than that, it's always the same types of questions. It seems like it's a lot of young people who come to post for advice here, and also A LOT of trolls which are really annoying.

It's funny that someone should bring up IMDb; I still check out the forums on there. I was an extra in a new zombie film last year, and it is amazing (more like odd) how there are no threads about it whatsoever. What is wrong with the world?

IMDb was probably the first forum I was a member of in 2003. This was way back when I went by the rather newbie name of Budgerigar. There was a guy called Ruben that I exchanged emails with for a long time, before my focus drifted towards other things. He lives in America. He is on GameSpot as well. I've never spoken to that chap in years now. There was also a guy in Ireland who I bought wrestling shows from, until he stopped doing it. Eventually, you have to accept that trends decline in popularity as the years go by, so nothing stays the same forever. In fact, all franchises that make millions of dollars are milked like crazy.

Other movie boards are the same: Activity is either just dormant, or the active threads I find have trolls baiting people to respond by posting something offensive or off topic. Then the next person replies and so on, which means the troll wins. The topic has now snowballed into 3 or more pages of obscure territory.

For example, this sort of crap happens on YouTube videos all the time, except on ones where the party who uploaded the video has disabled comments. Rather than just posting about what they like or dislike about a song or its music video, they ramble on about politics and make sly remarks so people will see the posts, and react because it bothers them. The next person replies to challenge what the person just said. People make up jokes about the dislike button by posting a comment relevant to what the video is about. Some of these I'll admit do make me chuckle, though.

It is ironic, but I saw a thread on the-horror.com about how people grew up, and had a life to live, but then they all got nostalgic about the site still existing. My heart was bleeding for them.

Then you get people who do NOT even read the damn posts at all. Like on Psych Central, I was talking about a befriending service because I explained that social services were not helping me any longer. The person even admitted they never read my post correctly (again, why bother?) and simply told me how to send a friend request on the forums, yet I was talking about something totally unrelated. See what I mean? Uh!

    Ha-ha.

i think interest comes and goes for most websites and the number who post regularly will diminish as you get older and have more real life responsibilities. i don't think fb has much to do with it, since most are saying f uck off to fb too. i think instagram or even twitter have picked up, gaming is still going strong too. also when some sites slow down the people with the big postcounts high tail it out of there to websites that can feed their particular internet addiction which in most cases is attention, the thanks and numbers game where on here is too small time for some it appears. just look at here and who has left, and i mean left not banned.

I mean, I can't speak for anybody else, but I certainly don't post just to watch my numbers go up. If nothing else, I think my sometimes ridiculously long posts show that I'm putting serious thought into most of my responses. LOL! Nor do I care for attention. I've always enjoyed message boards for exactly what they are SUPPOSED to be, which is a place to have discussions on various topics with other people who provide interesting thoughts/comments of their own.

I don't care if I am replying to a topic or starting my own (I very rarely start my own topic here), I just enjoy the continued conversation. The main reasons I would ever leave a message board I frequent very often would be A) because it becomes too populated with trolls and a-holes looking only to create drama (I've left many message boards for that very reason) or B) It gets so slow that there is rarely anything to discuss.

At least so far, neither has been the case here. Yes, it seems to have gotten slower these days, but there usually is some more activity if you just give it a day or two. Plus, like any message board, sure this one has its trolls. But, for the most part, the only trolls I have seen around here either just post spam, or they post stories/questions that are so bizarre they are obviously fake. To be perfectly honest, most of the obviously fake stories tend to still be entertaining in their own way, so I don't mind them that much.

    Unhappy

The only reason I am on social media (which I'm court banned from) is because I want to keep tabs on film production work. Sometimes, there is a call for extras, and I am very sad that I let anxiety get in the way last year when some stuff did come up. Even short films can be kind of cool sometimes, although there is not really much work available where I live. But social services as I've explained 5123 times already, don't help me anymore. The reason I'm not allowed on Facebook, Twitter and all that is because the court does not want me harassing my former support workers any more, since they believe I was stalking them. Jesus!

Anyway, the only websites I visit are horror related ones like Upcoming Horror Movies, for films, Rely on Horror, for games, YouTube, and Wikipedia (because it has lots of available information). It is also a good way to find out what famous people may have recently passed away. I've still been posting on Biohaze, but I rarely get acknowledged on there. The only other sites that I use are StarNow to use it for the same purpose as Facebook, and Amazon, Sainsbury's, the WWE Network, 123movies, forums like loveforum.net, healingwell.com, and not much else.

I find this forum like home. Been on a smaller more personal forum but it died. Then again there are bigger forums that have strict rules. I like the freedom here. Easy to register, get accepted and dont have to filter what Im writing. Free word of speech here. Yes this forum is quiet but so it was years ago when I first came here. I have found a lot here. Friends and girls that are more than friends. Really there was time when I exchanged like 700 messages with one girl. Helped her get out of dark place. Yet now 4 years later she got matried to her ex who is 20 years older and used to beat her. Wasnt happy for it so I got blocked.

Anyway miss some old members. Still keeping in touch with Smackie on FB. Chatted today. Used to like Michelle but shes now mother of two. Jeez a lot have changed ovet last 5 years. I say we used to be more like family here. But still a lot of love is still here these days. Really me and Jester are longest here. Both almost virgins. And yeah everything is pretty much setup to stay another year here on forum.

Usually, I don't like to speak ill of others, as I consider it to be bad banners. But there is this skank called Nicolette McKeown who got me into trouble with the pigs. She is an actress, but not a famous actress. All I did was say something on her Twitter last year about some people involved with a movie who were harassing me, and she blocked me. Granted, what I said was not even dire. It just was not desirable. Since then however, she's slandered me on Facebook to other indie film makers so they discard me. It's just bullshit.

I already have anxiety, which holds me back. My family are not interested in going with me to shoot films, to be honest. We also have a lot on our plate, because my sister could lose her other kid soon due to a permanence order. Google it, or something. But anyway, I don't even get help from social services because they just muck me around because of what happened with Autism Initiatives years ago. The social worker I have thinks it's a waste of money to pay a caregiver £16 an hour just to go with me to a major movie set. Like, other clients never get dictated to. Do they? Why me? It's just mince. Really, well and truly balls to the wall ridiculous.

It feels tragically ironic, though. All those years those sarcastic 'paid lackeys' supported me, and I sat on my skinny ass, doing nothing. Now I want to actually do stuff to finally 'get a damn life' before it passes me by, and they aren't around anymore. Like I said, I breached this crappy conduct requirement, so I can see the arseholes in court giving me yet another pointless CPO. Well, I was only supposed to see this tosser called David Perry until March. Now I'll likely be seeing him for stupid "reviews" with his bum buddy boss for more months to follow, so it will just drag on and on and on. And did I say he tries to use my damn helpers as stool pigeons? God.

@Exeter I think that is how some people who posts on forums think not most but is clear whom does think this way by how they post and when, mostly is cliquey. I wish woody would rejoin the forum I am certain she didn't leave for reasons mentioned but other forum issues and life. I left for awhile too, but not having internet made logging on difficult. @pcmaster Exeter has been here awhile too, so has PeterSC and even Jffs24. Looks like most of the long timer females left though.

My ex recently lost her father, as I saw posts about it on Facebook, and although she was not nice to me years ago, it's never nice knowing someone has lost a parent. I'd gladly comfort her online, but she just marks my friend requests as spam.

To tell you the truth, if there was a hundred people aware of her track record, they would probably say to me that I shouldn't even be looking at her Facebook or having anything to do with the cow anyway. Well, I still think about her, a lot. She was my first "girlfriend" of sorts, even if she was just a user all the time I knew her. But I feel I can't get her out of my head either.

I actually feel like the past several years have been a nightmare, with her screwing me over for my cash, anxiety holding me back from getting on with stuff, as well as being remanded in jail because of those shitty support workers, and just all the general BS happening in-between. When I found her back in 2012 though, I kind of got what I deserved, in a manner of speaking. She was not a trustworthy person in 2005 and there was all those years where I got messed around while I was trying to find her. She knew I was looking for her too, but she just played games. Only a fool obsesses over a woman for that long. Yet when I did find her, I was a bit of a twit myself. Anybody with some dignity would never have let themselves be used and taken for a sap. What she did to that iPod I bought her was inexcusable.

I've got a psychology report on Monday for the court, since I explained before in other threads that I breached the conduct requirements of my CPO sentencing because of some tart on Twitter who is an actress. My mother called it an interrogation, and she is right. It's just so stupid and pointless that the court defers the "case" for reports, and this reason, and that reason. It never ends.

Damn it. Just get it over and bloody done with already. Jesus H. Christ! It's not even funny by this point, and this legal nonsense is just wasting my time, and my life. Social services are next to useless, too. Why do you think I refer to them as stool pigeons? Essentially, they are just gonna be used for this purpose.

I'll be 31 on 26 January. I really, really hope I'll be able to make something of my life before I grow too old to care, but it's all about who you know in this lifetime. There's just way too many bullshitters nowadays. It's a lot like trying to separate the chaff from the wheat, actually. All the years I waste dwelling on morons like those former support workers, they just carry on with their lives. It's sad and unfortunate either way.

Well man I think now at 31 you have to rely on yourself and forget about social workers since you have learned they dont really care.
Try to earn new friends and make new relationships. Sure you are autistic and that makes it harder, but still try to be best you can be despite that it never will be perfect. You can compensate your shortcomings in other ways. Just be stronger in other ways.
I mean ay some point you have to stop blame world and others and just start withourself - see the problem in yourself and work on it, dont give others reason to put you down. It takes time but only when you will truly accept past and who you are, you will move forward and be happy. It takes understanding to forgive and forget. Without that theres no way of moving on with life.
Its time to learn from mistakes and stop repeating them.
