who wrote the Bible?

i had a nasty discussion at work with a lady that goes to a Spiritual Center that believes in both the Bible and evolution. so i asked her who wrote the Bible, to which she explained that many people wrote it and then pieced it together into one book.

I learned that you can almost never win when arguing to people about religion. Its like those customers that think they're right when they are clearly wrong. They just won't give up. Or will just ignore whatever you say or try to explain.

But yeh, I don't know who wrote the bible.

The funny thing is that there are a lot of people (Christians) who think Jesus is white and that the bible was written in English. Unfortunately, they don't even know the brief modern history of it, so how can you trust them with history before that?

i think the bible was just a recording of the stories that were being told at that time. the stories in the epic of gilgamesh were very similar.

ah, i feel so much better now. it's such a pleasure talking to you guys then to a close minded person who kept quoting me passages from different teachings. at some point i started asking if she had any of her own opinions and to stop quoting books.

Why can't evolution and the bible coexist? Don't get me wrong, I don't think the bible is necessary or even a worthwhile contribution. However, I'd rather the teeming masses of people who claim to believe that book also believe in evolution rather than taking Genesis literally.

The bible stories (the old testament at least) were originaly passed on oraly.

Eventualy the Jews started writing them down.

They also adapted stories (myths, legends, etc) from other cultures to fit it in their generic framework.

In a sense, the bible as we know it now, evolved over thousands of years.

As for the bible, it was written by a whole bunch of people, at different times. These times varied quite a bit....in some cases hundreds of years. Not all parts of the many testaments are actually included in the Bible.....just the stuff the church deemed appropriate.
